The Welfare Reform Bill has now completed its passage through Parliament and will ensure that no family can get more in benefits than the average working family earns.
Under the last Government, households were able to receive up to £104,000 per year in Housing Benefit alone. As a result of these reforms, the benefit payments received by a household on out of work will be capped at £26,000 per year to ensure that work always pays.
This move will be welcome by the vast majority of taxpayers in Bromley & Chislehurst – especially when you consider that the average worker in our area would have to pay tax for 19 years to pay for one household to receive the £104,000 in benefits a year.
It is time to make the ‘something for nothing culture’ a thing of the past and get some fairness back into the system.
