When Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne, her first Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, was also her oldest and Bromley’s MP, Harold MacMillan, was Minister for Housing & Local Government. Sixty years on, her Majesty has the youngest of her 12 Prime Ministers and Bromley & Chislehurst’s MP is Local Government Minister.
Britain has changed hugely in that time, economically, socially, politically and environmentally. Each year has brought, and continues to bring, fresh challenges. Throughout this, the Queen’s has been a beacon of stability, continuity and selfless, dedicated service. She has embodied the best of tradition whilst being open to sensible change and progress. She has given us a National rally point above politics and been a gracious presence for our country on the world stage.
She as a person, and the Monarchy as an institution, has been a constant throughout most of our lives. I am sure that we will all want to turn out in force when Her Majesty visits our Borough on the 15th May to wish her well.
