Yesterday’s unemployment figures published by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) have shown that the number of people out of work has again fallen in Bromley and Chislehurst. There are now 513 less people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in the constituency compared to this time last year, and 41 less since last month.
Unemployment in Bromley and Chislehurst now stands at a rate of 2.3 per cent of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, which is well below the London average of 3.3 per cent, and also below the UK average of 3.2 per cent. Particularly encouraging is the decline in youth unemployment, with 75 more 18-24 year olds in work compared to last year, representing a drop of 24 per cent in the constituency.
Overall, since the Conservatives were returned to Government in May 2010, 1.8 million more people find themselves in work. The figures released yesterday point towards the largest annual fall in unemployment for a quarter of a century, and show clearly, and beyond dispute, that our economy continues to move in the right direction.
